Top fitness trends to watch out for in 2022

A brand new year is here and already it’s looking more promising than its predecessors, 2020 and 2021. As Australia and New Zealand start to embrace life living alongside the virus-that-shall-not-be-named, we’re learning that the fitness world is evolving and looking much different prior to the pandemic.

During peak lockdowns, there was a trend towards home, outdoor and virtual workouts as they were some of the few options available to people. As a result, the fitness industry saw some of the hardest times since the GFC decades before. With lockdowns hopefully behind us and members getting back into facilities those trends will shift yet again.

So, let’s dive into the top fitness trends we’ll see this year!

Community sport

Say goodbye to workouts in the living room to a pre-recorded up-beat gym instructor ordering you to do burpees and hello to getting back to being a team player on the courts. Community and social sport will have a resurgence in 2022 as people try and make up for the social interactions they missed out on during lockdown periods.

You’ll find more people will want to get involved in their local netball, volleyball or water polo teams and play a social season of sport or two.

Exercising for mental health

In previous years, people have prioritised fitness for their physical health, weight reduction or muscle growth, or to help them manage stress levels. Overall, there’s been more focus placed on the benefits of working out for someone’s appearance rather than their mind. But with mental health an important topic in recent years – particularly with the amount of isolation endured around ANZ – a greater emphasis has been placed on exercise to help one’s mental health.

Regular exercise helps people manage a range of mental health issues, especially anxiety and depression. So thinking about ways your facility can create programs, classes, or spaces within your facility to help those with their mental health will go a long way in building a relationship with your members.

Hybrid gym memberships

While members are getting back into the gym and leisure centres, we still live in a very unpredictable world where we could isolate at any moment. Likewise, working from home is still a big trend for companies that can offer it, so many still want the flexibility of getting in a quick 20-minute HIIT workout on their lunch break over taking a trip to the gym.

Hybrid gym memberships, where both physical facilities and virtual services (like classes, fitness apps and programs) are all offered within a membership will become more of the norm moving forward.

Wearable technology

Wearable tech has been a trend on the big lists for years now – and it’s easy to see why! There are constant tech innovations that strive to give users better data at their fingertips. Smart watches and fitness apps on our phones will continue to a fitness staple for years to come.
